Lettings complaints rose by more than a quarter last year, reinforcing the belief in the industry that standard need to be raised, according to the annual report from The Property Ombudsman.

There were more than 7,000 lettings enquiries to the ombudsman in 2011, a 26% increase on the previous year, and more than a quarter of these were complaints concerning lettings agents who were not registered with the organisation.

Consumer awareness is thought to be key, as Government policy is not currently considering the regulation of lettings agents, and only 64% of letting agents operating within the UK are registered with The Property Ombudsman.
