Scottish based letting agents are now required to sign up to a new mandatory register by September 2018.  The Housing (Scotland) Act 2014 will also ask that agents abide by a statutory code of practice and undertake essential training in order to meet the minimum standards.

The Council of Letting Agents (CLA) have advised that although some agents have already signed up to the training, others are unaware of the imminent deadlines or the effect the changes will have on their business.

CLA policy group chair, Amanda Wiewiorka, said: “The CLA strongly welcomes the new regulation for letting agents which will help professionalise our sector and drive rogue players out of our market, ensuring a higher level of service for customers.”

The housing minister, Kevin Stewart, also commented saying: “I very much welcome the support of the Council of Letting Agents and other industry bodies in raising awareness of these important changes to the letting agent industry”

He advised that guides on the new registration policy are available from the Scottish Government to all letting agents to help them understand what the regulations will mean for their business.
