Deposit protection loophole being exploited by unscrupulous landlords

Government regulations dictate that members of deposit protection schemes should be expelled should they break the rules of such schemes. Unscrupulous landlords operating under the insurance based variants are intentionally being expelled so that existing tenant’s deposits are no longer protected. The unaware tenants then believe they have no recourse at the end of their tenancy when deposits aren’t returned. Few know that they can be awarded up to three times their deposit value by bringing a landlord to court if the deposit isn’t properly protected.
