Housing and homeownership should be a priority for the next government
With the next general election looming, one of the UK’s leading independent agents, haart, believes further emphasis needs to be placed on housing and homeownership to give more people a chance of buying their own home.
According to the independent estate agent, the government needs to increase the supply of new builds to support the continued rising demand.
Haart claim they would like to see new measures introduced to help ‘would-be property purchasers’ such as, a stamp duty holiday for first time buyers and incentives for families looking to move up the property ladder, as well as those looking to downsize.
Elections typically can cause the market to slow down however Paul Smith, CEO of hart says: “thankfully this time round the run up period is short, and soon the property market can jump off this latest political rollercoaster and resume activity again”.
He added: “a clearer vision on Brexit should hopefully allow for a new government to stop being distracted, and put more pressing issues – such as housing and homeownership – first.
“As the chronic housing shortage continues to spiral out of control, and the size of deposits and stamp duty continues to soar, purchasing a property remains nothing but a pipe dream for millions. And that is hardly a vote winner.”
Smith believes that the policies proposed by haart would increase fluidity in the market and free up more properties ensuring more people have an opportunity to own their own home.
