Much needed legislation or an attempt to attract votes?
Labour’s leader, Ed Miliband, has called for longer-term tenancies and rent controls within the private rented sector. Has he however focused too heavily on tenants and forgotten about landlords and letting agents?
On the face of it providing tenants with greater security appears to be a fair proposal, but the suggested terms shift the balance of power significantly away from letting agents and landlords to tenants. It can also be argued that the abolition of fees applied to tenants by letting agents and the capping of rent increases will stifle the private rented market and negatively impact all concerned in the long run.
